Predictions and the Future of MLS Cup

November 17, 2009 by Joseph Aldrich

I’m really not going to get to deep into this year’s MLS Cup final. I think it’ll be a repeat of last year. The strong, consistent LA Galaxy will handle their “wild card”  opponents in the same fashion a strong, consistent Columbus team did the year before.

I think RSL will use the same strategy as the Chicago game, but be unable to shut out LA. The Galaxy is just too good.

What I do want to get into is the mention of playing MLS Cup in the future at the home field of one of the two competitors!

I don’t like it. I think it would lead to a home field advantage pushing the 80% mark. What I mean by that is I think it could get to a point where the team earning home field advantage in MLS Cup would win as much as four out of five times, ultimately taking away from the excitement of our championship game.

The neutral field provides what the fans want; a chance to find out which team is better regardless of other-than-soccer advantages. While the home stadium atmosphere definitely plays its part in MLS and soccer around the world, I think we’ve grown happily accustomed to our single game championships played at a neutral venue.

All thoughts welcome!
